Canon Eos 500D - Finally, All In One Device
Canon EOS 500D I own for two weeks and took about 800 photos at this time and movies. Now is the time to draw conclusions.
So far, I photographed with a Canon EOS 30D (and will continue to do so!) Is an old EOS 20D. The latter now had the 500D soft (yes, I like to use two cameras, one with wide angle lens, the other with a telephoto lens).
The Canon EOS 500D in many respects a great advance in other ways, at least a small improvement.
The picture quality is generally quite good, as I expect from a Canon EOS. At ISO 100 noise is virtually no detectable, even ISO200 is eigenlich as well. At ISO400, however, we noticed a certain deterioration in image quality, which, however, makes image editing with more get a grip. ISO800 is faced with large Canon EOS least the same in terms of noise. This also applies to higher values ISO. The 500D is now offering up to ISO12800 legendary. ISO6400 is - if not too much into the picture zoom out - for a 15MP APS-C chip very well, while also running ISO12800 screen size very well, with careful noise reduction can be so good, but get a grip.
After all, it is now possible in extreme sensitivity of a recovery in almost total darkness. It's going to be some lights on the street. It is recommended that in case of doubt, overexpose anything, because pushing on the computer is not recommended because the noise is much increased.
Who would have better, probably to buy the 5D MKII - which is obviously much more expensive.
JPEG directly from the camera are certainly very useful. With Tonwertpriorität and the automatic control Nachberarbeitung brightness (Autolight Optimizer) is normally required, not more. On older cameras, I often had to resort to Füllicht for brilliant images - this can save here now. However, it is very relaxing, not having to retract all the images. With a clearness of 4-5, the images are also quite "crunchy".
Of course you can also use RAW. However, this suggests that each image with 18-27MB to book. Here you should use a memory card large enough. RAW offers more flexibility for Nachberarbeitung - but not necessarily get more details.
In direct comparison with the 30D, I must say, though, that makes the 500D is definitely no best picture, at least not in the area of ISO1600. I see only advantages in the greater sensitivity and better to JPEG in-camera (in this case, the 30D is not as good, and RAW has many advantages).
The advantages of 14-bit, enhances the Canon, I could not find even with the 500D. Neither she nor better able to absorb the colors in which they showed the best grades, as stated happily.
For the 500D, you should absolutely use good lenses. The 18-55mm IS actually play, as measured by various well enough, but I was a little disappointed 'in use at the 500D. With 17-40mm L, I definitely get better results. The 70-300mm IS USM cut the 500D very good.
What should be considered: the 15MP APS-C chip should not be too dark. From 8 opening of the unpleasant effects and diffraction blur. This may be, at least for some situations (landscape) is important.
Since his body is well managed, the 500D. The large display is clear, bright and sharp. Finally, also offers a reasonable resolution (230,000 pixel 3 "does not necessarily take it ...).
The treatment seems solid, obviously not in magnesium as the 30D, but solid plastic.
At 3.4 fps and 9 RAWS, or about 170 JPEG images in a row, the continuous shooting mode is very usable, but I would cover situations where fps are important, but access to my 30D, which offers 5fps.
Now, for the feature, since it was also one of the reasons I bought the 500D. Given my experience with cameras have been rather disappointing, I had the 500D as it is right.
The quality of the film is very good, I'm using 720p. I have no use for Full HD, mainly because it works only with 20fps. One Minute Film consume at least 300MB. The clips are in MPG format. Because of the high rate of data, you can compress them quite easily, without significant loss of quality.
The sound is unfortunately only recorded in mono, presumably for reasons of marketing. But he is very good and clear.
The autofocus is generally quite slow and straight for lentils with pinion drive clearly audible. Manual focus is recommended - thanks to the display good, but not a problem.
Overall, I must remain only two things in the film function:
- Sometimes you experience streaks. This phenomenon has been discussed on the Internet and that explains that not all of the sensor is read. Something bad, because I would have hoped, but the performance for very large sensor
- In some situations, the "gate" effect occurs. This is due to the CMOS sensor, which can only be read line by line. One should therefore be added to prevent the rise too fast moving objects on the side.
Regarding the limit of 29:59 minutes, we owe it to an EU regulation aimed at preventing possible to move the cameras with video functionality, the camera. While it is some discomfort, but honestly, how many times you take the video longer? My previous maximum was 20 minutes, and that was an exception. Because of the high memory requirements of the video I see it as what matters is not so bad, except it is still in the era of video editing easy to put together a longer film on the computer. And with the clips to cut what is normal in any case.
At least I do not see this as a problem, especially because a battery in any case only provides the ability for about 60 minutes of recovery.
Since I still appreciate all the advantages as the depth of field easily controlled. While the camera does not provide this for you, but it is possible, but as an adapter to connect a larger goal, you set the aperture manually. My experiments with the old M42 lenses have been here very interesting. DOF is controlled in normal cameras, with their small sensors (1 / 6 "or even 1 / 4, 5), not given.
All in all, I am quite happy with the 500D. There is really only a couple of things that worry me. This would be, first, the small problems with video recording, on the other hand, I find it awkward that the video mode on the dial landed at the bottom so that I as a user of semi-automatic (open / time) the wheel has almost always go around them have access. A direct integration would have been better, as well as the ability to start recording with the shutter button and not with the Live View button (if you're not careful, then the video begins with a forward movement ...). For this I would have gladly given up Fotofuktion in video mode, which is anyway rather sinnfrei because we have neither the time nor aperture control and one for recording a short film, "Blackout" has. Addition, some absurd values chosen for the setting, as the clear Himma f/16 at a shutter speed of 1 / 50 seconds. Unfavorable for moving subjects ...
My conclusion:
The 500D is almost an egg "Wollmilchsau, this time with one or other restrictions, for the division into more real models from Canon, but I must say that this is the first" figure "is Canon EOS, which really convinced me . L '400D took me too bad, the 450D could not enthusiastic about that. The 500D is a DSLR camera with good video and the ability to change lenses in one - and that counts for me.
Because of the rather slow progress in the quality of the images and the minor problems I have to deduct a star, but a recommendation for the device!
PS
At the movies at least, capable of solving the problem with the artifacts. Since the last visual style used is also used for the film, may be in a too high on the edge of said artifacts. We recommend that you use for the filming of a style of photos, where the sharpness is set to 0.
