What's the best way to make shots smooth using a tripod?
I'm doing a film/video, but some of the scenes are more complicated than others because I pictured some of the shots would follow the actors. What I mean by follow is that I can maneuver around scenes without making the shot/cam all jiggly; a steady shot. Unfortunately, I don't have any money to buy those HD cams so I just use a home cam. No money for dolly tracks either.
I've been thinking on putting myself on a skateboard while a person pushes me around the scene, but that seems kinda dangerous when I'm shooting a fast-running scene. I've also thought about gluing computer chair wheels on the bottom tips of the tripod, but I'm not too sure Home/Office Depot would sell me anything like chair wheels.
Any suggestions would be awesome! Thanks!
Sounds like you are trying to create something very elaborate on a modest budget. I think you should think of the type of scene you are trying to shoot and taylor your shot capturing plan to each scene.
One thing that should make your goals easier, is the fact it is a movie and you should have an idea of what action you will be trying to capture. I think you would be very limited to how much you would be able to maneauver on a skateboard but it might help with the jiggling. If I used a skateboard I think i would want at least two people to help. One to push me around and one to help catch me when I fall. Not only would I have to rehearse the scene but I would have to rehearse the taping also, especially with two guys helping.
My idea would be to find an old shopping cart to be pushed around in maybe. Carts are proned to tip over especially if used for "transportation" in this way. The safest way to use this idea would be to weigh the bottom down to make it less "top heavy" It is gonna make it harder to push but more safe. I would still have a couple of people helping me move around and watching out for acidents.
In any case play it safe. Whatever idea you come up with, try it out and see what kind of panning shots you will be able to make. Some of your limitations might be compensated with some clever editing.
You might find that the best you can do is one sweep of the camera while your going in one direction. However this gives a few possibilities.
You could start far away and zoom toward the action or zoom away.
You could go by the action and turn the camera in smooth fashion toward the action as you go by.
Now that I think about it more, if your on a flat surface, a rollable tripod seems the best option if you make it heavy enough to hinder bumping and jiggling. And yes home depot would have some chair wheels that you might be able to mount to a board and then mount the tripod to the board in some fashion. It would probably be best to get 5 rotating wheels for best stability and avois tipping over.
