SLR Camera settings for the 'Northern Lights'?
Hi photography people..
I may be taking a trip to possibly Iceland or Norway to witness the 'Northern Lights' phenomenon and take many photographs..
The camera I have is a Canon 400D SLR and I currently have 3 lenses (standard 18-55----1.8 50mm----70-300 Zoom lens)..
I would love some professional tips on what camera settings/modes/ I should use for taking photos of the lights with my 400D..
Also,should I use a tripod at all times and would I need different lenses to the ones mentioned so that I get much sharper/better photos?. I really don't want to waste this great photographic opportunity!
I am an amateur at the moment with SLR photography but have taken some fairly decent photos so far..
If you have seen the lights yourselves in either of those countries then maybe you can advise me on the best time of year to travel and anything I may need to know..

First you will have to pick a lens that will frame the area of the sky in which the aurora borealis is active. Most of the photos I have seen are all shot with some kind of wide angle lens, that means that your 70-300 mm is out of the running.
The 50 mm lens may cover enough of the sky to capture the "lights", but your best bet will be the 18-55 mm ... but check first.
Using the camera on a tripod and doing a test using the aperture priority mode, take some shots. If the results are over exposed, leave the shutter speed alone and in the manual mode start stopping the lens down until you get good colour saturation and are happy with the results.

Based upon the chart, shoot your shots at ISO 200 @ f/4 with the lens set at 18 mm for 120 seconds. Adjust the time as necessary to get good saturation.
You know, it is amazing that you did not just search the internet for the answer to your question. I just typed in " photographing the aurora borealis " in Yahoo Search and got the answer in seconds.
