Photographers: How can I take pictures of motion in a dark setting without a flash?
I have an Olympus 410E digital SLR camera that I would like to use during a dance recital. No flash photography is allowed, the auditorium is dark, and the dancers move quickly on a stage with mixed lighting. Because I will be using a tripod I have to stay at the back of the auditorium to take my pictures, and no, there is no rehearsal so I am stuck with these conditions.
Any suggestions on the best camera settings to use? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I would use Shutter Priority and set a speed of 1/100. You should have a chance to get near the stage before the recital starts to take some readings. You are for sure going to have to raise the ISO quite a lot, probably at least ISO 1000. See what aperture your camera sets and then manually set this aperture and shutter speed into the camera. The 1/100 speed will still give you some blur to show movement, but will be fast enough to help freeze subjects that are not moving very fast. You will have to accept that you are going to have photos with digital noise in them, but that is better than nothing. You might want to consider converting the photos to black and white in your post processing program. Also, I would turn auto focus off. You will probably be far enough back that focus will be at infinity anyway.
Good luck, you are pretty limited in what you can do in this situation, but I think you will still get some decent shots.
