What tripod should i get for my camera?
I just got a Nikon D300 with a big heavy telephoto lens and I need a tripod sturdy enough to hold it. I want one that can take different types of heads. However I find the selection and various heads and legs combinations to be baffling.
I am willing to spend up to $400 for the total package and weight is not a factor (I won't be carrying it on long hikes). Any suggestions?
I personally prefer Gitzo (formerly of France, now based out of Italy) and they seem to be a favorite of Nikon users that I know.
Besides stability, the ease of using the tripod and its feel is a major consideration since you'll be constatnly adjusting every leg, knob, head, column while framign your shots. Go to a well stocked camera store and spend some time examining all the moving parts of different tripods. I'll bet you'll be very impressed with the percesion movement of anhy Gitzo tripod.
I went from owning a huge Bogen that I used for everything since it could hold my large format camera. However when I started to shoot 35mm most of the time I picked up a medium weight Gizto 2330 series 2 with a Gitzo 1277 ball head. It is a newer design with a reversable/removable column so you can get the camera very low to the ground. It also holds my heavy 80-200mm 2.8 Nikon lens very steady. I paid about $450 for this package.
