Unsure about which tripod to buy?
All right, so I have a camera.
Not a DSLR, but it's an ultra-zoom powershot... SX1 IS, and it weighs in at around 600 grams. Not so much, but more than the normal gorilla tripod can take.
So, I'm stuck with these:
- Buy a gorilla SLR tripod
- Buy a chunky, big tripod
Well, an ordinary tripod, at least.
But that's not the point. The point is, would you get a flexible one, or a big tripod?
Gorillas are good. But they're short. And you can't attach them to everything. Do they come in bigger sizes? If you're shooting in a forest, you can't use a Gorilla. The trunk of a tree would be too thick. An ordinary tripod can be adjusted.
So, thoughts?
In my opinion you'll get more use and benefit from a traditional tripod. Just avoid the temptation to buy some cheap, no-name department store special. Choose from Manfrotto, Slik, Gittos, Velbon. Always remember: "Quality doesn't cost, it pays."
I suggest buying your tripod from a real camera store (one that only sells cameras, not 10,001 other things and cameras) so you can try different models. Some have a ball head while others have a 3-way tilt/pan head. I use a tilt/pan head for my landscapes.
