question about star trek technology?
please, no negative answers
anyway, i was curious as to how a replicator works, most sci/fi shows and games like to advertise the science behind the futuristic tech, i never found out how they explain it.
if anyone has an explination, it would help, thanks
The replicator is a by-product of teleporter technology.
The star trek transporters work by using very high-tech scanners to scan the location and velocity of every atom and molecule that makes up your body.
This is then saved onto the computer buffer and sent via a normal light-speed signal (perhaps radio waves or some other method... im not sure exactly what they use on star trek) To a Receiver at the other end.
This then regenerates the stored "image" back into your body. The body on the transporter pad on the ship is simultaneously vaporised and presumably made into energy to help supply the immense power needs of such a machine.
The replicators are basically copy machines, Miniature transporters. The "image" of many types of food and materials are saved into the computer banks of the ship and then can be made by "teleporting" them into existence using the saved copy on the ships computer.
the power needs for such a machine would be IMMENSE however... We all know the famous equation E = mc^2
Basically:
Energy = Mass x Speed of light squared... or
Energy = mass x a VERY large number...
so for any given mass that the replicator "replicates" the energy needed to power it will be a very large number multiplied by this mass. (speed of light squared is approximately 6*10^16 or in normal notation 60,000,000,000,000,000. Ignoring units)
The logic behind the idea of a replicator seems sound... but in reality there are a couple of issues with making one, not to mention the power needed.
1) Heisenberg uncertainty principle:
The Heisenberg uncertainty principle states that we cannot know the location and the momentum of a subatomic particle to infinite precision.
Basically... the better we know its location, the less we know about its velocity and visa versa... and there is no way that we can fix this.
It doesn't matter about technology, even with the most advanced technology ever created, this law would still be an issue.
This doesn't nessecarily stop the production of teleporters or replicators... just means that they would be prone to errors or malfunctions.
2) The memory storage:
Storing the approximate location and momentum of every atom in somebody's body would require an IMMENSE storage space.
to put this in some perspective... imagine we had lots of 100gb hard drives to store this information on. In order to store the information of the atoms in my body you would need so many hard drives that they would stretch from the surface of the Earth halfway out to the center of the solar system...
Now fair enough, storage methods are getting better and we're seeing TB hard drives becoming common, Multi-TB hard drives will soon be easy and cheap to purchase. But there will be a limit to how small we can go.
Again, this doesn't stop teleporter or replicator technology. It's just a hurdle.
And finally an issue with human teleportation in this fashon.
It would Kill the person being teleported... Basically... the person on the pad gets vaporised and an identical clone of them is made. YOU arn't really teleported, just an IMAGE of you. Which is then recreated at the other end.
The clone would think it was you, it would think it was just standing on the teleport pad. It would have all your memories... it would think that just prior to the teleporation it had washed its hands... however... its hands would have never touched water in their entire existance as they would be made from new matter.
So, getting teleported would effectively end your life... and a clone would continue your job. Then when that clone gets teleported, it would die, and a clone of your clone would continue... and so on...
Not the most ideal situation...
But, again I'm not being negitive here, im just stating facts. I believe that we will have a form of macroscopic teleportation and replication working eventually. Although i believe that it will just be for food and supplies. I doubt if we'll be teleporting humans unless under very extreme circumstances and i just can't see a way past the killing/cloning issue.
Anyway, sorry this is a HUGE reply... thank you for reading it lol
Hope this helped.
