Hand-held shooting with wide-angle lens?
I'm considering buying a Sigma 10-22mm lens for my Nikon D50, and I'm wondering if it's advisable to be using this without a tripod. I'd like to use it on my 3-month trip to Asia this summer, but there's absolutely no way I'm going to cart around a tripod for that long. Since the Sigma is sharpest at around f8-11, and needs to be held more or less perfectly level to avoid distortion, should I even bother using this as a travel lens? It's going to be more or less useless in low light (although I have a 50mm f1.4 in my kit for these situations anyway) - will I get disappointing images if I try to take landscapes/architecture shots hand held?
Robert has already pointed out some great stuff and I agree 100%. I do want to add a couple of things, though. First, with a lens like that having such a short focal length range, your depth of field will be tremendous even at moderate apertures like f/5.6 and f/8. And the lens will be plenty sharp at those apertures, too. Just because it is sharpest between f/8-f/11 doesn't mean the results won't be useable at f/4-/5.6.
And one of the joys of digital cameras is that you can also crank up the ISO if you need it for a particular shot. You may be adding noise, but it's always better to get the shot with a little noise, and maybe not the ultimate lens sharpness, vs. not getting the shot at all.
Then, lastly, wide angle lenses are far more forgiving of movement than long lenses. The general rule of thumb is 1/focal length is the minimum shutter speed for handheld shots. So for you camera, the range of 1/10th to 1/30th of a second would be the minimum, and anything faster than that would be fine for handheld work. Don't forget that you'll be able to find walls, trees, fences, etc. to prop yourself and/or the camera on for support. I often shot handheld at 1/15th with a 21mm lens on my Contax G1 and the shots are super-sharp!
For instance, if you find that at ISO100 on a sunny day, at f/8 you are getting shutter speeds of 1/250th, you could go all the way to ISO400 (still acceptable but with a little bit of noise) and to 1/25th of a second @ f/5.6 for a shot at sunset, which is 6 stops difference!
Bottom line: I don't think you have anything to worry about. Travel light, and enjoy!
