Stand Tripod Max
I am looking to get a tripod but am confused over the maximum heights of all the ones I have looked at so far?

I want to take pictures where I can stand upright (mainly looking to use it for landscapes, panoramas etc). I haven't been looking long but all the ones I see online appear to max out at 1500mm (not quite 5ft).
Are all photographers that use tripods really short - or am I missing something?
Even with my camera on top I would not be able to compose a decent shot without wrecking my back whilst attempting to peer through the viewfinder at a much lower than comfortable working height.

Please advise me - is there some basic gem of knowledge I am just overlooking?

There are tripods with three extensions to the legs and there are those with four, obviously the four segment ones will go higher, but they are not as stable, won't take such a heavy camera and they are heavier to carry, I've found a heavy tripod rarely get carried anywhere, which kinda defeats the purpose.

One piece of advice I would offer buy quality - buy once. Gitzo and Manfrotto are good, I'm still using a Manfrotto tripod I bought 40 years ago and it still works as it did on day one (doesn't look the same though LOL).

With cheap tripods you are forever having to re-adjust as the camera will just 'droop' off frame, they are a real pain to use. With a quality tripod you frame the shot, lock off the ball head and it stays exactly where you put it, even with a heavy camera and long telephoto lens.

Often the problem is just the opposite of your question, you can't get them low enough. With landscapes you tend to want a foreground, middle ground and distant object(s), often my camera is just a few inches off the ground for this, as I want them all in focus, a small aperture is called for, which means slow shutter speeds, hence the tripod. With wide angle lenses and medium apertures, say f8 or whatever the 'sweet spot' for your lens is, your shutter speed would be fast enough to hand hold anyway at eye level.
