My horse has long sloping pasterns, is there anything I can do?
My Quarter Horse gelding has long sloping pasterns, and almost no heel. He is currently barefoot. I thought maybe putting some light weight aluminum shoes would allow his heel to grow out and maybe correct the angle of his pasterns slightly. Also are they any type of medicine boots I could buy to put on him when we go to rodeo's and stuff that would help support his pasterns? He doesn't seem to be in any pain and our vet doesn't think he will go lame because of it, but I was just wanting to know if there is something I can use to aid in supporting his pasterns. Or is their any type of supplement I can put in his feed to keep his joints flexible and pain free? I don't ride him very often and not to hard but I would like to know his joints will be sound every time we do ride. He is also about 10 years old and it's only his front pasterns that are sloping, his hind ones seem perfectly normal but I'd still like to out a boot or wrap on them.
Being your horse is already 10 years old, there is not much you can do about the pasterns. The heel just needs to be let alone to grow out while the farrier only trims the toe and a little from the sides. Anything that is done, however, needs to be done very slowly over time. The older the horse is, the harder it is on them to change foot angles or try to correct pastern angles and, if not done correctly and very gradually, it can result in a horse that is much more sore/lame than you started with.
As for support, try doing figure 8 wraps. The material you use for the wraps will determine how much support is provided as well as how well you performed the wrap. If you do not know how to do a figure 8 wrap, then I'd suggest asking someone to show you how. If it is not done properly you can cause a lot more harm to your horse than good, including causing your horse to bow.
Polos will provide minimal support. Brace bandages (such as Ace and Trace) can provide modest protection, but keep in mind they are most effective when new and don't last very long. Vetrap and Coflex provide medium support. For maximum support, use Equisport. However, if Equisport is used, it is best to put it on as close to the exercise or competition as possible and remove it as soon as you are done. You need to be extra careful when applying it as well, because of its 'stretchy' nature...it is quite easy to either wrap too tightly or too loosely.
~ You know what is really sad? When certain people stubbornly cling to their false beliefs, and then resort to reporting other good answers for pointing out the truth and opposing that said person...Really sad...
~Unless, all of the veterinarian, vet techs, trainers, owners, breeders, competitors, etc. that I know are all mistaken...wraps and boots do help support and protect a horse's legs. The risks most certainly do NOT exceed the benefits...Also, when laying claim that research has shown that the benefits of wraps/boots is "insignificant" or "2%" only, shouldn't you be able to give substantial evidence to back that claim? Articles all from the same publication (of which none have mentioned the "2%" only benefit) are not a very substantiating argument. Anyone that knows anything about research and validating claims should know that you need many Different sources from Different sites, plus the articles given are not the original publications of the research- they are written with a certain audience in mind, to have a certain appeal, and are undoubtedly almost always going to be slanted one way or the other based upon the writer's own feelings...They are not, by any means, the 'bare' facts as a result of purely scientific research.
~And just one more thing, if someone thinks they are so correct in their answer, then why does that person need to keep changing their answer until the resulting product is completely changed from the original text of the answer they had first supplied?
....Yep, it really is quite sad....plus it only helps refute their answer and argument further...
