I have a sony camcorder with a LANC jack and an infrared remote that does not require LANC. Why use LANC?

LANC is a different form of "remote" control, for different uses.
LANC is a way to hook up devices that you can attach to the camera to remotely control zoom, focus, things like that. The prime reason to use this is if you're shooting on a tripod. In fact, many tripods actually come with LANC remote devices installed.
Instead of leaning over the camera itself to control such things, often in awkward positions, you can use the LANC device, often attached to the tripod's pan handle, to control zoom and focus without your hand actually leaving the pan handle. This way, you don't have to fumble around with buttons on the camera itself while shooting.
LANC is used mostly by Sony, though other manufacturers use different wires and plugs to accomplish the same purpose.
