Marine Corps birthday ball questions?
-Who can attend? Only active-duty Marines or can retired Marines attend too?
-If a retired Marine can attend is it only if invited by someone else? Is there some sort of restriction there? I really wanna get this right because it's crucial to a story I'm writing.
-Also I need this to be a really, really big celebration (I need a large crowd) for the plot to work.
-Are there like several official balls on the same night? If so which is there usually one that's the biggest event?
-As far as guests, who'd be the highest ranking type of (non-military) person who'd show up? The president? A senator? Foreign head of state? Or is this just about the Marines?
-And just to double check, Navy corpsman can attend the ball too, right? The party idea is no good if I can't the get the most important character in the door!

I'll pick a best answer quickly.
While Nov. 10 is the official birthday most units have their ball sometime that week. Sometimes there may be several nearby, such as downtown San Diego. Las Vegas hosts a lot of balls, I have been there for 2 and sometimes run across other units doing it the same night as well, but in another ball room.
Most balls are just for a specific unit like a battalion( roughly 850 men) and their guests, so the total may be around 1300-1500. It is by invitation only, though Marines are allowed to invite several people. Any Corpsman attached to the unit is invited as well, and sometimes corpsman that used to be in the unit are invited as a guest by the Marines they worked with.
Usually the guest of honor is a high ranking officer like a general, or a former member of that unit like a retired Colonel that served in Nam or something. Normally the guest would not be a civilian unless they had been a Marine. If someone could arrange it then a high ranking civilian like the SECNAV might show up, but unless they had a connection to the Corps they would probably not be invited.
