How do I get my dog to drink on a hike?
I take my dog hiking on the weekends, usually for about an hour. She starts panting pretty hard at the end because of the heat, but for the life of me, I cannot get her to drink water while we're out hiking or walking! Any ideas? I've tried collapsible water bowls, a fancy automatic water bottle--even took her own water bowl on the last hike, just to see if it would work...nothing. I've been shortening the duration of the hike, because I'm concerned about her hydration, but I would much rather go on extended hikes if I can just get her to drink....
My dog is a little goofy about strange places too. She doesn't like to relieve herself in any unfamiliar place. I have found that she will go if she really has to. My dog also used to be fickle about eating, and I was worried, so I took her to the vet and asked him what he thought. He asked me if I ate when I wasn't hungry.... I am assuming that this is try about thirst.
She will drink if she's thirsty, just make sure its available for her. My dog sometimes stops at puddles when shes really thirsty.
Good Luck, enjoy your hikes!
