Baseball, outfield, ball hit directly over head, you realize you drop-stepped the wrong way, NOW what do U do?
You're playing center field, a ball is hit directly at you, but obviously over your head, you have to drop-step one way or the other and chase the fly ball, you rely on your instincts in making that decision - and as soon as you make it you realize you turned the wrong way - even if you can get deep enough to make the catch the ball is behind you (over the wrong shoulder.)
If you try to correct and swivel your hips 180 degrees, you're going to lose speed.
If you sprint back to the correct depth, turn, and try to shuffle in to position to make the catch, the ball may have drifted too far (especially if a left hand hitter struck the ball and you drop-stepped, turning your hips 90 degrees+ towards right-center field - the ball is probably tailing back towards left-center field.)
Beside unleashing a few expletives in reference to your poor choice in direction -- what are you thinking at the moment you realize you turned the wrong way? What do you do?
I would probably swivel my hips, although I would lose speed, I feel it would be my best hope. Another option is the basket catch, but that is very difficult to execute, at least for me it is. I would either swivel my hips and turn the other way, or wait to play it off the wall depending on how fast/far it is going and how good of a chance I have. As soon as I get to the ball, I start swearing under my breath. I sure am glad only one or two other people can hear me out there. Definitely a tough play.
