Lighting for portrait photography?
What is the best lighting set up for portraits for under $500?
There are multiple strobe lighting kits but I want to be sure Im getting the right one before I make a purchase.
I should have added detail about my experience. I have 3-4 years of experience with continuous lighting for video work. I have a good idea of lighting techniques and principles I've just never worked with strobe lighting in a studio setting. I need information on what kind of wattage to use and what controls I should look for on the lights themselves. Any kit recommendations are appreciated!
Go to calumetphoto.com and search for the genesis kits. You can get them with softboxes or umbrellas, stands, and cables, and I think they are in your price range.
While I would go ahead and get the two light kit for the savings, don't start out trying to use two or more lights. It will get very confusing very quickly.
Softboxes do not give a softer light. Soft light has nothing to do with the modifier. Soft light is a product of the size of the modifier relative to the subject. The difference in softboxes and umbrellas is that the softbox gives you more directional control of the light and allows you to feather it better. Umbrellas have a lot of spill. I prefer to have both on hand, but if I could choose only one I would go with a large umbrella. If you learn how to use it properly the you have tons of lighting options.
The umbrella kit would serve you well starting out and you can add a softbox later. The convertible umbrellas that come with the Genesis kit are very versatile and large enough for small group portraits.
