What is the best light meter to get and is one needed?
I just ordered a ton of studio lighting equipment. I will be doing weddings, portraits, fashion shoots, etc. Using 5d mark 2 as well. I know some photographers don't use flash readers, since you can see results immediate. Some say built in camera ones work.
I am thinking from lens flare, and not a true picture on the LCD display, probably should get one. Do you think one is needed, and if so what brand is the most popular for price and accuracy?
Not to sound harsh but can you really trust your entire exposure to a 3 inch LCD screen, which is 3 inches diagonally, when your probably going to print at least some of those shots at over 8"x12"? Even if you check your histogram the very colors can skew that reading one way or the other. Get yourself a light meter and at least know how to use it.
Your cameras built in meter treats everything as if it were a neutral gray. Since very few items that people shoot are neutral gray this isn't usually a spectacular exposure. Your highlights can be blown or your shadows can be lost with no detail. A white wedding dress in the sun for example can loose all detail since your camera also sees the black tux's of the groom standing next to her.
Your in camera meter won't do flash either. It's just not designed to do that. You can look at the histogram but I already covered that. If your shooting a wedding or other run and gun situation you'll want to use a 580EX (or two, or three). You'll also need to know just what the heck your doing. Don't use someones wedding, a once in a lifetime event, to practice anything. The chances of screwing it up are great, even for seasoned pros.
Sekonic seams to be a pretty standard answer from what I've read (and not just on Y!A). If you plan to get Pocket Wizards Sekonic makes a meter that has a built in transmitter, which makes checking ratios much easier.
