'Burning' on Adobe Photoshop CS4?
Is there a point at which burning stops and black is just black?
If I have a photo of someone in front of a black backdrop, I burn the background to try and make it seamless. Only, seamless on MY computer isn't always seamless on other screens - you can see stripes of slightly darker areas.
I've tried to calibrate my computer screen and it hasn't solved the question. So do I just need to keep obsessively going over and over the background till I've managed to get it all, or will there always be a darker 'black'?
Of course. Black is black.
You are probably working in an RGB color space, so go to window and make sure there is 'info' (you can also hit F8), you will notice a little thing with RGB information. Something that looks like:
R:122
G: 34
B: 212
It will change based on what your cursor is hovering over.
Obviously, black is R: 0, G: 0, B: 0.
That will tell you about the information that is actually in the file and will help you to edit the picture regardless of the calibration of your screen.
There are better ways than just using the burn tool though.
A far more effective way would be to use layers, but there's a bit of a learning curve there.
The way I would do that is to quickly make a duplicate layer, blast up the contrast, jump over to the channels, pick a channel, make a slection, refine the selection with contrast and dodge/burn within the channel, then apply as a layer mask to a layer of darkening of black in 'darkening' mode.
If you can follow that, that's probably the best way.
Barring that, a simpler way would probably be to just use a fill layer like this:
Duplicate layer.
Control I (invert)
Control Shift N (creates new layer, empty)
d (sets colors to default, black foreground, white background)
x (exchanges background and foreground colors)
control-backspace (fill with background color, now black)
click the eye to hide this layer
Go back to the duplicated and inverted layer
Control a (select all)
Control c (copy)
Go to the black layer and at the bottom of the layers box, there's a little grey rectangle with a white circle. That button creates a Layer Mask. Click it once.
Now there's a little white box. You can click on that to work on your layer. If it's highlighted, you are marking on the layer only. If you click on the picture to the left of it, you are working on the picture.
You need to click on the LAYER, but you need to hold down the ALT key to see the layer in the main window. (alt-click the pic to the left in the layer box to go back to normal view)
Now simply control V to paste in the inverted pic in what looks like black and white.
You will notice an immediate change in the resultant pic.
Now you can burn and dodge that to refine the effect and it will REALLY look seamless.
It might seem a bit daunting at first, but go through it step by step and you will realize that the entire process can be done in about 3 seconds or less.
