Splicing cat 5 cable?
Here is my situation. I have an intercom system in my home that uses CAT 5 cable for each run from the master unit to a room station. One run needs to be lengthened and instead of having to re-run from the master to that particular room (major time and labor with this), I would like to make a splice and add on additional cable. I have attempted to splice the cables by hand, using electric tape for each colored wire but that has proven detrimental to the functionality of the intercom and it does not work properly. What is the best way to lengthen my run? I basically need to just add more cat 5 to the existing run I have. Is there some type of coupler that I could use? Thanks for the help.
you have to use a coupler. Cat 5 cable cannot be splice like phone lines. Couplers usually only cost $2-$5. Connect new ends and use a coupler. If you can't find one in Radio Shack or Home Depot use Amazon.
