Physics: Reflection & Refraction 2?
A movie theater projectionist must know how to select the proper projection lens to fill the screen with an image of the movie film.
Given: The picture on the movie film is 3.2cm wide. In a particular theater the screen is 10meters wide and is located 30 meters from the projector.
Find: a) What magnification is needed to fill the projection screen?
b) What object distance is needed to produce this magnification?
c) What should be the focal length of the lens?
I am very confused with these questions, so if you could please provide me with a detailed explanation...that would be wonderful.
a) Magnification is the ratio between the picture sizes. This must be: 10 meters / 3.2 cm = 100/3.2 = 1000/32 = 31.25.
b) The image size is proportional to the distance from the lens, both for the the projected image and the film image. This means that, since the distance from the lens to the screen is 30 meters, the distance from the lens to the film must be reduced by the magnification factor. Thus, it must be 30 meters/31.25 = 0.96 meters = 9.6 cm.
c) The required information about focus is:
1/(focal_length) = 1/(image_distance) + 1/(film_distance)
Therefore, 1/f = 1/9.6 cm + 1/30 m = 1/(0.96 m) + 1/(30 m) = 1.075.
Therefore, f = 1/1.075 = 0.9302 m = 9.3 cm is the focal length.
