New wide screen results in jerky waveform displays. Advice?
I just got a new monitor, wide screen Samsung SyncMaster T200.
I set it at the recommended resolution and refresh rate (1680x1050, 60 Hz), and I installed the drivers.
Unfortunately, when I edit audio files (in WaveLab or Audacity), the waveform display moves jerkily instead of smoothly. Also, some online games are slow. I did not have these problems with my old monitor.
Additional info: My graphics adapter is Intel 82865G Graphics Controller, and my OS is Windows XP Pro.
I tried updating the adapter driver, and it didn't help, plus I downloaded updates from Microsoft update.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have to edit a lot of audio files...!
The 865G integrated graphics you are using is pretty weak.
The reason why your new monitor is slowing down your system is because it has a lot more pixels the weak graphics card has to drive.
1680x1050 resolution is 1,764,000 pixels. That's a lot of pixels your motherboard's weak graphics has to calculate, process and display.
Your old monitor probably has a lower resolution like 1024x768 or something. 1024x768 is merely 786,432 pixels (less than half of your new monitor), which the 865G integrated graphics can keep up with.
Solution? Either set your Windows to run at a lower resolution (which means the monitor is not going to look as nice and sharp), or get a more powerful video card (if your motherboard can accept one).
There are two variants of the 865G motherboards out there. One with an AGP slot, and one with no AGP slots at all (just slow-as-molasses non-express PCI). You need to find out which version you got.
If you got an AGP slot, you can add an ATI Radeon HD3850 AGP graphics card, which is the most powerful AGP card available.
If you don't have AGP slots and only have non-express PCI, it's time for a new computer.
Obviously the low-rater idiot can't understand the simple fact that higher resolutions require more powerful graphics cards.
