Economics; change in technology on graph help!?
Here is the question:
Using a graph explain how an increase in technology will affect the equilibrium price & quantity of DVD players. Also, what happens to videocassette recorders?
For the DVD players, I said supply increases, eq Price decreases, quantity increases. But videocasettes I am confused.

I'm an economics major and I think I can help you on this question.
You are right on the supply-side shift in the supply schedule and the decrease in price and increase in quantity.
You see, DVDs and VHSs are substitutes. Either one serves the purpose of home video so either will work for the consumer.
From the consumers' point of view, a decrease in the price of DVDs will make them more attractive. So, they buy less VHSs and more DVDs. This will cause a decrease in the demand schedule for VHSs--the market for VHSs is a different graph.
So, to display this whole situation you will need two graphs: one for DVDs and one for VHSs. There will be an increase in supply on the DVD graph and a decrease in demand on the VHS graph.
