What are the proper steps to calibrate a broadcast monitor using an SMPTE signal/pattern?
I am using an Avid Media Composer Adrenaline and a G5 with Final Cut editing systems with Sony Broadcast Monitors... How do I calibrate the monitor to display the correct colors and hues of my video?
Ok here's the process to set up a monitor based on SMPTE color bars. First get the color bars showing on the monitor then do the following:
1. Turn of the all the color - you should only have a black and white picture now.
2. Looking at the lower right hand corner there are 3 bars of various intensity. Adjust the brightness until the middle bar is not visible and the right bar is barely visible.
3. Adjust the contrast all the way up and then turn it down until the large white square at the the bottom near the right side begins to respond to the change
4. Turn the color back on
5. Look through a blue gel that makes the image look black and white again and while looking through the gel do steps #6 and 7
6. (while looking through blue gel) Adjust the chroma/color until the far left and far right bars are of equal intensity with each other and with their sub bars (the little squares right under the bars)
7. (while looking through blue gel) Adjust the tint until the 3rd and 5th bars are of equal intensity with each other and with their sub bars
8. Final touch up. Due to some NTSC variances in color you may have to do some adjusting while playing a video of known good flesh tones.
