Which Camera: Nikon D90 or Nikon D5000?
I'm really getting into photography and my mum said if I wanted to I could get a better camera. I really like the Nikon D90 and the D5000. Which one is better? Are there any other cameras you think I should check out? Thanks so much!
Better is a relative term, both cameras will capture an image well enough. The only differences between the two are size, the D5000 is physically a smaller camera than the D90, an articulated (and smaller, lower resolution) LCD screen on the D5000, fixed larger and higher resolution LCD screen on the D90, and the D5000 doesn't have an in-body autofocus drive motor like the D90, so the only lenses you can use with it are AF-S lenses (lenses with built-in autofocus drive motors). Though standard AF lenses can be used, they can only be focused manually. Other than those few things, the two cameras are the same - they just handle differently and are about $500 apart from each other in terms of price.
The D90 has more functionality, in some ways, and can be used with a wider variety of AF lenses - which may be important only if you plan to use other lenses than the standard kit lens. It costs around $1200 with a lens, and is one of the highest positively rated cameras on the market. If you get it, you will not be disappointed and it will serve you for a long time. My first DSLR was its predecessor, the D80 - which I continue to use enthusiastically 3 years after I got it. It is a middle of the road, very competent camera.
The D5000 is perfect for beginners as an entry level DSLR, it can be considered vastly less expensive than the middle classes in any brand category at $750 for both the body and kit lens with VR (vibration reduction), and offers the same resolution as the D90, using the same image sensor as well. It will likely target a lot of the techie crowd with the HD video and articulated LCD screen - real photographers have little use for such features, though the D90 also has the video capture feature (which is rarely used by most people, in most situations). And it is also perfect for people who will not have an interest in a broad selection of lenses, if they elect to even remove the lens it comes with at all.
So if price is of concern, there is a fairly significant difference between these two cameras, in terms of cost. So for many people the choice can be easy if they know that the difference is minimal.
But, if you can either afford the added cost, or can wait and save up, I always recommend buying as much camera as you can manage financially. Buying the best camera will not make you the best photographer, by far. But buying the best camera you can afford can leave room for your progression in, and understanding of photography. So, if you have $1500 to spend - get a D90. If you have $3000 to spend - get a D700. But, if you only have $1000 to spend - get the D5000 and rest assured that it will do as good a job as the $3000 camera, only it gets there differently.
Sure, there are plenty other cameras you could check out - but most are similar in price, and still only do the same thing in the end. So far your interest is in nikon, so unless you've got a burning desire to see what's on the other side of the fence, go with it.
