Why is the speed of light constant?
I know the speed of light is a universal constant in a vacuum at 186,000 m/s but why?
Because all spacetime models are Lorentzian Manifolds. The typical property of lorentzian manifolds is they preserve a "sphere" equation ( depending on the metric of the spacetime of course) . Now, consider a light bulb at the origin.Now, imagine you turn on the light at t=0, then you can write the equation for light as:
x^2 + y^2 + z^2 = (c*t)^2
which means. photons with speed of light determines a sphere which has radius c*t. Or, you may write this equation as:
(x/t)^2 + (y/t)^2 + (z/t)^2 = c^2
as mentioned above, the spacetime stucture of the universe preserves sphere equation, so, if you are an observer with velocity V, and assuming that your coordinates are, x', y', z', you observe the same sphere, such as:
(x'/t')^2 + (y'/t')^2 + (z'/t')^2 = c^2
Hence. you obserce the same speed of light in your frame.
In summary 
, the reason of constant speed of light is Lorentzian structure of the universe. If there'd been another structure on the universe, we'd have observed different constant in the nature, since, all Lie gruops admits a global parallelization.
