Why are my photos too dark using Nikon D90 and SB-900?
I've been using the Nikon D90 and SB-900 for about 6 months now, and whenever I use the flash with TTL my images always seem under exposed or too dark! Am I doing something wrong? What settings should I check? I shoot weddings and I hate having to run the images through Adobe to fix the exposure. I can understand if some of them are off, but every single one is too dark! Please help!
You know, I was going to charge up the flamethrower... but what the hell.
Take the camera off P or green box auto and you'll not have this problem. The camera is assuming the foreground is what you want lit, and when it determines that the foreground is lit, it shuts off the flash. The remainder of the frame (background) will look like a cave. If you have one light colored object, like say... a wedding dress! in the frame, that is what the camera will expose. All of the dark colored objects, like tuxedos, end up underexposed.
Shoot in Av mode, and watch your shutter speed. Even better would be manual, more control over things that way. You'll have to get into your manual for the flash to see how it works with your D90 in manual mode. Probably just fine, but you never know.
This is why I shoot with auto flashes and manual mode. I know what is going to happen before I press the shutter button.
A wedding shooter should already know these things...
