Which is the best (cheap) Digital Flash to buy?
I use a Nikon D40 and intend to buy a Canon Digital Rebel XS. I usually use two JTL S-25M slave flash. My portrait photos usually have a shadow to one side despite the two slave strobes being on equal or varied distances on each side of the subject.
I was told that the (built in) flash on my Nikon D40 is too small. I am planning to buy a digital flash (preferably less than $100) that can work on the Nikon D40 and the Canon 1000D.
I saw some marked TTL. What's that? What do you recommend?
If you are comfortable using your flash in manual, you can buy one of the three flashes on this page for less than $100: http://strobist.blogspot.com/2009/03/manual-flashes-two-debuts-and-adoption.html I have two of the Vivitar 285HVs and they are perfectly fine, although of course you get what you pay for so the build quality isn't as high as a more expensive Nikon or Canon unit.
If you want a flash that adjusts automatically based on your camera settings and the available light (This is TTL) then you'll need to spend quite a bit more money. Another advantage of using all-manual flashes is that they will work on both Canon and Nikon cameras, and also with radio or optical slaves. The hotshoe for nearly all cameras is identical - it is only the more advanced electronic circuitry that is unique to each brand. No TTL flash will work on both cameras.
