How to use a capacitive sensor to trigger a relay?
I know how to use an Op Amp to sense a differential input and trigger a relay. This works great for resistive and voltage based sensors.
I imagine that I need to do something with AC, but im not certain. Perhaps use the capacitor to phase shift then rectify it for a variable voltage output?? Do you think 60hz AC would work or do I need to generate a higher frequency?
What are your thoughts? Thanks for your help!
capacitive sensors use oscillators and frequency much higher than 60Hz. instead of developing one, you can also buy them. typical sensing range for capacitive proximity sensor in 18mm barrel is about 10-15mm. like most industrial sensors, usually it operates on DC (nominal is 24V but they all work in wider range, usually 12-28V) and can drive relay directly. check Turck, PhoenixContact, Omron etc.
there are AC versions too (as well as DC with NPN output) but PNP is most popular in western world (NPN is popular in Japan).
