how do you meter with an external flash on top of your camera?
canon 5d and 580ex ii
i never use on camera flash, if i did i would use a light meter to measure the flash exposure or use the gn/fstop=distance rule
or you can use the histogram, in M mode, set the iso to 100, shutter to 250th (250th should eliminate to much ambient light, for more ambient lioght use a slower shutter) , then shoot something and move your aperture up and down till you get a good histogram
if your camera and flash are really playing up, if you got it from a shop take it in and have them check it out, the best way to test flash/camera exposure is to shoot some green grass in auto - its so close to mid grey that if you get overexposed shots (you had washed out issues b4?) then there is an issue with the flash and camera communicating, - warrenty time.... (shoot down onto the grass so the area its measures is flat - dont shooot along the grass - if that makes sense?)
