Choices: Macbook or Studio Lighting?
I have $1300 dollars available.
I can use it to buy camera strobes/lighting which probably will result in my learning a lot, but not result in cash return any time soon.
Or I can buy a Macbook for $1200 (I already have a brand new HP DV2000) But I sell disks, and I have some that are for MACs. I cannot work on the disks or copy them etc without a MAC based operating system. Chances are the MAC would pay for itself in 2-3 weeks time, but I am not positive.
What would your suggestions be?
MAC and hope for high return?
Lights and hope for a lot of Christmas Portrait work?
Save your money by not duplicating what you have already ... a notebook computer.
What kind of discs are you talking about? Programs? External drives? CD's and DVD data discs can be used on both operating systems. If you really want to use the Mac OS, just buy it and install it on your HP. Both HP and Mac use the same processors.
Adding to your photography accessories (lighting in this case) will add to your flexibility. Buying a different notebook will do two things. Require you to learn a new operation system and two use money you could be using in a more photographic way.
I am a pro and use my HP dv6000 with a 500MB external drive when ever I am on assignment. It has Photoshop loaded on it as well as the programs I use to edit (sort) and generate invoices for my clients.
I switched to PC when i found Photoshop CS ran faster on XP machines than my OS X. There were a couple of other nasty little things Mac did ... when I would attempt to copy my image files to my Mac using Finder, it would automatically erase the files from my memory card. Not a good thing.
