How can you save a new dance studio?
I just opened in October. I love to dance. I can teach as well but I allowed some former students of mine to get their feet wet and teach the classes. They don't listen to what I say and do their own thing. As a result, our Christmas program was horrible. Horrible in the sense that I know that these kids were nervous (5-12 year olds) and had never had dance before, so to me they did well just to get out there. Problem is that there was only supposed to be 2 guest per child people brought like 6. It was standing room only and the kids just frooze. Some walked off stage and cried etc. After two months parents were expecting a recital and it was only a 2 min. watch me per class. Parents left angry. Kids were embarrassed and I reopen on January 2nd and I am afraid no one will be there. Help!!!!
The responses are wonderful and I admit I was being friendly and not putting my foot down. Thanks so much.
Chin up, old girl. You're a BUSINESS woman, not just a dancer now. In business, these problems happen. It's horrible. But, that's how the mice get cut from the men, so to say. THINK. You have two prongs to attact this from. One, is how to get old people to return. The other is to get NEW students. Sit down and work out a strategy for both prongs. You learned something VITAL, though, about working with children . . .they freeze up upon inspection. In the future, they need lots of inspections, so to say. Invite Nursing homes to cart their able residents over, one nursing home a week, for the pleasure of watching dance classes and "extra" rehearsals. The elderly will LOVE it, and the children will grow accustomed to being eyeballed. Invite daycare centers, EVERYBODY to come watch. You also learned that you need to work on your management authority style, since no one listened to you and "did their own thing". Don't invite them back if you are in a large enough popluation center to get away with that. You can't be friends with staff and teachers. And, you can't give them the idea that they can do their own thing. If you are a gentlewoman, guess what? You have to learn how to snarl and command and mean it if you want control of a bunch of artists. Artists are the worst. I'm not teasing, either. They are like four year olds sometimes. Be powerful and confident with them. Give them creative license only after they've risen in your respect. But, back to prongs now. As for the old students, send out VERY nice newsletters describing your next semester's program, mentioning your lessons learned about THEIR children's stage fright and your graceful confidence about the recital in planning. Name it. Describe it. Have a high school child draw a simple black line coloring book style set of eight drawings about the coming season's recital to make into a very simple little coloring
booklet for each of the students to entice them and make them dream of dance again. Package the coloring booklet and eight-pack crayon box together attractively to go inside large envelop with newsletter for each family. If possible, download and include in the packet a bunch of photos on plain paper from any snapshots you have taken throughout the year, again, attractively set in some kind of way with a cover, not too fancy, just an added touch of class of some kind. For new students, GET GOING on that. Advertise with the little coloring booklet and a few snapshots added to it by placing a bunch of the booklets in pediatricians' offices, dentists offices, in a stack left at the post office, the pool, WHATEVER. The booklets don't have to be done professionally, hon. Just make them on a printer, fold and go. A touch of ribbon to make them look fancy would be nice. Spruce up your studio. Make it shine. Get some unbiased viewpoints about what could look better. Lose the fake plants sort of stuff, lose the neutral colors. Introduce bold colors, lower lighting (lose the overheads wherever parents and new clients may be and work in regular incandescents). Get your hair styled in a bold new way that says you're optimistic and confident, wear a corsage and bright make-up, be glamorous, at least just for now. Pump it. You'll be fine. Let me know how it goes. My granddaughter is an EXQUISITE six year old ballerina and I'd send her to your studio if it were left up to me. : ) Good luck.
