What do I need to look for when buying a studio monolight?
Looking to buy studio lighting, preferably 300w/s for under $300. However, Ive noticed that vendors are specific to include voltage. example. 250 Watt/Seconds (110-120V AC/12V DC) What is so important about the voltage? advantages and disadvantages of variables?
The voltage is important to tell you that you can plug it in, if you're in North America, or you can use it portably. This is huge if you shoot a lot of location stuff. Power supplies are not cheap either. The 250 w/s has nothing to do with the actual voltage of the unit.
300 w/s is a good amount of light. The other important thing to me is having variable power control. This is what I mean... My old rig had 3 settings. 1/4 power, 1/2 power and full power. It was a 3 position switch. My new rig has a knob that is not stepped. It goes from 1/8 power to full power. Its much more versatile. I don't have to make every adjustment on the camera.
