how do I set up lighting for a portrait studio?
I have been an outdoor photographer for 20 year. most of my photography is of sports and special events. however it seems to me that there is a lot more money to be made in weddings. But for the life of me I cannot figure out how to set the lighting up. I have a back drop and two umbrella lights. but the photos still look. like my 6 year old neice took them. . I hate to have to take a class just on lighting. but I will it that is what I have todo.
Ok it seems that the morons that reply are not reading the whole comment. so let me clear it a little more. I have been in Journalistic photography where the lighting comes naturally to me. However this is studio lighting. something Im not familiar with. So please only real photographers answer this question. Because reall photographers would understand what I am saying.

You have received some great advice. I assume you have a flash meter. If not, get one. It's critical for studio strobes. For a quick, simple setup, put your main light at a 45 degree angle to the subject. Take a light reading from under the subjects chin. Be sure to point the meter at the light. Also, make sure the second light is not on. When you get your reading, turn off the main and set the second light just behind your camera. Adjust the output of that light until you get a reading one stop below (lower number) than the main light. Do this by putting the meter under the subjects chin and pointing to the fill light. For example, if your main light recorded F8, set the fill light for F5.6. This will give you a nice lighting ratio. Then simply set your camera aperture to the main light reading ((F8 in this example), turn on both lights, and take the picture. Once you learn that, you can play with other light angles and ratios.
