Fianally able to purchase a real fish tank stand, what is the best method to move tank to new home?
I want to know just how low I can empty tank without harming fish and being able to move the tank onto it's higher stand. The stand I have now is not as tall as new one.
First off, it's best that all the decorations, gravel and filter stay wet with tank water. No need to change the water at all unless doing a partial water change. Have a large container that most if not all of your tank water can go into. If you have a hang on back filter then make sure it can fit on to the container as well.
First, cut off the filter and siphon 50% of the water out of the tank into the large container and take out all the decorations and plants (assuming fake plants). Then very gently net your fish and transfer them to the container. Get as much water out of the tank as possible without stirring up debris and add that to the container as well. If there is still not enough water to run the filter then add conditioned and dechlorinated tap water.
Depending on how much gravel you have, you may or may not have to take it out. If it's a lot then you can add it to another container with tank water or even the container with the fish. I do not suggest doing too much cleaning to the tank at this point because you probably will lose a large amount of beneficial bacteria so leave that for a week or so after the move.
One important thing I have to say because it's happened to a friend. If you feel like the tank is too heavy, DON'T STRAIN YOURSELF. Just make sure you have some friends or family with you to help move it or else you may cause yourself back problems, a broken foot and shards of bloody, watery glass every where. Always get the 'okay' from your friend who is carrying it with you to actually start moving.
Then after the tank is done, just repeat the steps as said before. Good luck!
