How do I cook cubed beef on the hob so that it is soft and not chewy?
I bought some stewing beef to cook. Our oven does not work so I have to cook it on the hob in a saucepan. How do I cook it so that it is soft and tender and not chewy? I only own saucepans, no pressure cookers or anything like that.

Sprinkle the pieces of beef with Adolph's Meat Tenderizer and beat it with something heavy, I use the bottom of a heavy coffee mug. If you don't have Adolph's Meat Tenderizer, just pound it good, salt & pepper it, and follow the rest and it will still be tender. I don't always have tenderizer and the meat still gets tender this way.
Then after seasoning beef with salt & pepper & pounding it, put a small amount of oil in the bottom of one of your pans, not a lot,just enough to barely coat the pan. Place the beef in it. Stir it around while browning, to get all sides brown. You can add a little onion while browning if you like, just don't let the onion burn. Then, when thoroughly brown, cover with water and bring to a boil. Then lower heat, cover and simmer for an hour or so, add a small amount of water if you need to. Check it until it is real tender. Then you can serve with rice. Or at this point, I sometimes add a little more salt & pepper, onions, cubed potatoes and a can of diced tomatoes and add a little bit more water to make to make it soupy, cover and cook until onions and potatoes are done. It makes a delicious stew and I serve with cornbread and slaw. I used to not brown beef first and I'd just boil it, but browning it gives it SUCH a better flavor. Good luck.
