What are the ideal distances?
I was just given a studio set, and was wondering what the ideal distances are. Its a 3 light setup, so I am assuming the third light would be used as a background light since it is so short. I wanted to know what are the ideal distances between
1)main light and camera
2)main light and fill light
3)fill light and camera
4)main light and subject
5)fill light and subject
6)subject and background
7)background light and background
8)camera and subject
I think I covered everything, basically I am wondering how to set up a studio with a 3 light setup. It also came with 2 softboxes one larger than the other, and a silver lined umbrella, and a round reflector gold on oneside silver on the other. If someone could help me decide when/how to use those or give me site to go to so I can learn it on my own that would be great.

What you are asking is something along the idea of the "string" method of setting up lights. It is also called the method lighting technique.
Keep it simple.
Start out using one light with a soft box and shoot your model from all angles, use a step stool to gain elevation. Be sure to keep them away from the background (black is best when you are starting and getting used to what lights do.
Then after you have explored all the things on light will do, add the fill light and adjust it for a 1:1 lighting ratio to a 6:1 lighting ratio and see how those images look. You get the Idea.
Enjoy and have fun ... there is no right or wrong way to light per se.
