Best external flash/artificial lighting options?
I'm trying to find an answer that isn't so broad on this subject.
I'm basically looking for some extra artificial light to aid in the lighting of my photos.
I already have an external flash, a fantastic one. I usually use a shoe cord to help me direct where the light will be coming from. But now I'm wanting to get a bit more experienced with this.
I basically want some type of umbrella or soft box set that is portable. (I only shoot on-location sessions).
I've looked into qflashes, but don't really know much about them. Also have looked into mounting a second external flash on an umbrella stand.
I guess what I'm asking is what are my best options, how do I set up the whole system and begin using them in my sessions, and any other info you can provide me.
Thank you
There are alot of options out there. Do you want to use the strobes TTL or set them manually. Are you looking for hard or soft lighting/will you just use a key and a fill light or do you want to also have hair lights, background lights and possibly mulitple fills. I have used as many as 5 speedlights or as few as one but geting it off the camera IMHO is definitely the way to go. Do you need light modifiers like grids, gobos or snoots ?
Go to strobist.com and go though the lighting 101 section it will do a better job explaining your options than I could here. The Q flash is great but you may find for what it cost you would be better served with 2 or 3 less expensive speedlights and an inexpensive radio trigger.

For inspiration go the bookstore or library and pick up Joe McNally's " The Hotshoe Diaries" it will give you an idea of what modern speedlights can do.
AFTER you go though the tutorials and learn what you want Midwest Photo has some good strobist kits that put together alot of the parts you may want

My personal strobist kit right now is a mix of SB800s, SB600s and a couple of Lumopro manual flashes along with a very very old cokin creative flash that I use set as a ringlight usually for fill. I use umbreallas more than softboxes and have the type that are both reflective or shoot through. I have a couple of plusII radio triggers by pocketwizard but have recently gone to radiopopper triggers and found that they are much cheaper than the pocketwizards and to date I have not had a misfire from them yet. I will also use the Nikon CLS without radio triggers at times.
