Is it better to feed a big puppy dog food?
I just adopted a 7 month old pit bull from the shelter, I want to get him good quality food like Wellness so he can grow strong and healthy. I heard that dog food compared to puppy food has more nutritional value. Is this true? Should I get him puppy food or dog food?
I'm confused cause there seems to be two opposite opinions here!
Puppy food has less calcium for your puppy. Puppy food has less calcium so that the puppy does not grow too fast for it's joints. If your puppy grows too fast too soon it will cause health problems. That is why it's so important to feed large breeds puppy food when they are pups as they are more susceptible to joint/bone problems if they get too big too fast.
Many people wait till around 1 year old to change to adult food as that is when the dog has reached about 90% of its max size. There is no magic age however, since many people arbitrarily start earlier or later. I believe for most dogs it doesn't matter that much, it's more important for the really large breeds or breeds that are known to have joint problems.
