Might want to look into a business laptop with an Nvidia Quadro or ATI FireGL graphics card. Those are optimized for OpenGL 3D work and modelling and using programs like Maya or CAD. Plus they're much tougher and more durable than your average consumer laptop.
Dell latitude E6400 is a good one.
