How To Create Great Photos Using Slow Flash Sync
First, let's pretend you shoot in a wedding reception during the evening so the available light isnt bright enough for using the camera with no flash. Under these circumstances, you have to use the flash in order to avoid blurriness in the resulting picture. But, direct flash results most of the time in freezing of the main subject, for example the groom and bride and leaves everything else totally black or either with some sterile, indistinguishable background. A nice example of a shot during a wedding is capturing the groom and bride while dancing and the other dancers visible but blurred. The resulting photo gives the most out of both worlds, because the main subject comes out sharp and clear, in the same time retaining a sense of atmosphere and movement of the occasion. This is the part where slow flash sync comes into play. If you chose this option using the menu of your camera and decide to use it, you will end up doing actually two things. First, this allows full exposure as if you hadnt selected flash mode at all. And second, it will fire the flash also. What results is that main subject, i.e., the groom and the bride, will become sharp because of the flash phase. But, the shutter will stay open for the purpose of exposing correctly the general scene. The final effect then is while the groom and bride become sharp from flash, youll also get the groom and the bride including all other dancers blurred. You could almost sense the movement of dancers by using this technique plus, of course, this will work for all other sorts of photo opportunities. For example, surf crashing above a rock under evening light. This could give a great effect by combining sharp droplets frozen in time with blurred water in the background. What if you combine it with a sunset? Just imagine that effect! It would sure be a fire winner, right? There are lots of other great shots you could shoot using this technique. Just use the imagination to get equally exciting subjects - also don't forget to take several shots. A professional does that and for a good reason - taking several shots, it must be that one of the shots would have a better timing compared to the others - and thats the one that you want. So get into the camera's menu to try the option for slow flash sync and open another new world of great photo opportunities. Im sure that you wont regret it plus youll be rewarded with breath taking results.
