Shrinking The X10 With The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini
Product leaks and advance images of mobile phones yet to be released are the stuff that creates excitement and anticipation in the markets. Just about all the innovative handsets that made it to markets started as a rumor.
Before the 2010 Mobile World Congress just concluded, product leaks about a miniature XPERIA X10 Robyn in various colors found their in the mobile communities online. This just got confirmed as it came out in two models - the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini, which is a touchscreen monolith and the Mini Pro, an identical twin but with a QWERTY slider half-shell.
Looking at its data sheet, both handsets share the same specifications except that the Mini Pro has a slighter larger set of dimensions with its QWERTY slider. They really live up as a Mini version of the stunning X10 inside and out, leaving nothing to be impressed by with watered-down features.
They still use the same Android 1.6 Cupcake which remains an embarrassment for Sony when all its Android competitors have started using the latest Android 2.0/2.1 Éclair even as early as when it was announced. We thought the delay would be caused by Sony porting its Rachel/UX (User eXperience) UI on the new one but it turns out they didn't.
It looks like the X10 will be coming out in April under Vodafone UK and not in the 1st quarter of the year as Sony earlier claimed. The Mini version is slated to ship in the 2nd Quarter as well so it seems the Xperia clan will be coming out as a bunch.
When they finally hit the market, the Mini will be in six different colors - black, pearl white, pink, red, silver and lime, while the Mini Pro will just be in two – black and red.
Mini Features
For sure, taken on its own, the Mini is a fairly capable Android handset just looking at the specs. And just looking it creates the impression that Sony is pitching the handset to a wider crowd wanting a more affordable, smaller and more pocket-friendly smartphone that the X10 is not.
The Mini measures 83 x 50 x 16 mm and weighing 88 g which makes it the lightest touchscreen smartphones todate. Under the hood, don't expect the same 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon but as a minimized version, it is powered by a less powerful Qualcomm MSM7227 processor clocked at 600 MHz.
- The Mini is a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone on the 2G network as well as a 3G phone on the dual band UMTS with HSDAP/HSUPA. There's WiFi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 to support its local data connectivity options. You also get SatNav functionality with a built-in A-GPS receiver with Google Maps.
- Its display is just right for its body size with a 2.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display. It has QVGA resolution and 16 million colors. There's a gravity accelerometer for auto rotate portrait or landscape viewing with the tilt of the handset and an anti-scratch glass cover.
- Its imaging gets a capable 5 megapixel autofocus camera, down form the 8 megapixels in the X10. You still get LED Flash, face/smile detection and geo tagging from its a-GPS. Video recording details are wanting in the press kit except to say it has a video light.
The Sony Ericsson XPWERI X10 Mini gets a paltry 128 MB of phone memory way down from X10's 1 GB but is all you get microSD expandability of up to 16 GB. There's also a standard lithium polymer battery the can promises a talk time of up to 4 hours and a standby time of up to 285 hours when fully charged.
