Jeep Wrangler Replaced slave&master cyl but Prob still not fixed!!!?
I have a 1998 Wrangler Sport 6.0cyl. It started acting up by locking up after going in reverse or taking my foot off the clutch at a light and it would not engage in 1st gear or any other gear until a restart.
Its definitely not the clutch (no residue or grinding). We were told to check out the slave cylinder. It looked pretty beat up so we bought a new slave cylinder and the master to go with it. The system was bled a few times. It is much better than before but it still locks up!!!
I don't know what else to do. I really didn't want to take it to a shop but we're out of ideas.
Any ideas... please!!
The '98 Jeep Wrangler clutch hydraulics is a sealed unit and can not be bleed in the conventional sense. Over time any air in the system will bleed out on it's own.
The initial problem is more likely your pilot bearing. If you've had a clutch installed recently it may have been installed backwards, it can be done, or not replaced at all, happens.
If this is the original clutch than it's time for replacement. Complete clutch kits are not that expensive but changing a clutch on a '98 TJ is a major chore. Plan on a full days work at minimum if you do it yourself.
I have two '98 TJ's and I replaced a clutch on one a couple of weeks ago (it was doing the exact same thing your's is, fixed now with the new clutch) and I need to do the other soon, it has 136k miles on it and is slipping badly so it's due. I do all my own work but I just might fork out the cash for this one. Shop around, if you can get a new clutch put in for around $300 jump on it but that's what is going to fix your problem.
