Deer Meadow Farms Corn Maze and Hobby Farm, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Manitoba Corn Maze
Mid-Summer and fall visitors to Manitoba should consider stopping at Deer Meadow Farms Corn Maze and Hobby Farm as part of their travel itinerary. Opening in August of 2009, Deer Meadow Farms is Manitoba's newest Corn Maze and Hobby Farm. Nestled in the Pine Ridge parkland region near Bird's Hill Provincial Park, Deer Meadow Farms is a stone's throw northeast of the provincial capital city of Winnipeg. Families can relax and enjoy the outdoors with agriculture based activites that are common to corn mazes and hobby farms.
Corn, Corn and...
The main feature of the Corn Maze is...(surprise!) the Corn Maze. With 8 acres of tall corn that is over your head, finding your way around can be difficult without a map and a sense of direction. Climbing the observation decks prove to be very helpful. The maze features a design cut into it that is visible from the air and pictures are posted on their website and front entrance so people can see exactly what it is they are getting into. It also helps serve as a map so people can navigate the maze. The Maze itself is seeded in spring and the design is cut into the maze at a later date using computer aided GPS technology. The Corn Maze is difficult enough during the daytime, but proves to be even more fun in the dark...but don't forget to bring a flashlight. Rain makes for a muddy experience so bring rubber boots or extra shoes and a plastic bag to change on the way out.
Is Getting Lost ever Safe?
In addition to the Corn Maze, there are smaller mazes to occupy your time. The wooden maze is called the Pallett Puzzle because it is made almost entirely out of recycled palletts. It is a tight and challenging maze for all ages with bridges, platforms, tunnels and a tower. At Halloween the Pallett Puzzle gets ramped up with flashing strobe lights and fog machines. The bale maze is a smaller maze for younger children that is not too challenging but still provides them with a lot of fun. The Straw Bale Tower is a 4 level pyramid for climbing.
Who Doesn't Love Animals?
Animal Alley is the name of the petting zoo and it is very popular with all ages. With farm animals like a calf, goat, sheep, pigs, chickens, rabbits, kids are allowed to pet the animals and feed some of them. There are also exotic animals lilke Fallow Deer, however they are not domesticated and are not easily approached by humans. Some fawns can be bottle fed but for the most part they would prefer to keep their distance. They are still nice to watch.
Garden Fresh Vegetables
The market garden is open from August through the end of the season and features all sorts of farm fresh vegetables like Sweet Corn, Pumpkins, cucumbers, tomatoes and various squashes. Opening in 2011 or 2012 is a new area called the Cherry Berry Orchard which will feature cherries, saskatoons, raspberries and apples. This will be a U-Pick operation where people can come and pick their own fruit for fresh eating, baking or preserving.
There are hayrides, 3 picnic areas with firepits and a party tent also available for group rentals along with a concession stand that sells snacks. During the fall, Deer Meadow Farms hosts educational tours and field trips for schools and groups that provides them with some basic knowledge of agriculture and the important role that farming has in producing all sorts of food for people and animals. The message that 'Farmers Feed the World' is an important one that Deer Meadow Farms is sharing with the next generation through an fun and entertaining way.
