Can I create a softbox effect with fabric?
Can I just put some white fabric over my built-in flash and get a softbox effect? Maybe create some sort of device that allows an inch or so between the flash and fabric? Am I really off? Or how else could I do it?

There are a number of products out there for softening on camera flash. Bear in mind that the built in flash on most cameras is not very powerful and once you start diffusing it the effective range is really going to drop off. You are also limited by the flash location; even softened on camera flash is not going to give you that professional, softbox look.
