Budgie (Parakeet) Chicks?
We have new arrivals! As of March 31, April 1, and April 4, we have three new parakeet babies. The daddy is Angel (my baby ~he's male!~), and Emmy. But I have a few questions.
1. The downy feathers are coming in WHITE. I was wondering if this is normal? Because Angel is an albino (all white with red eyes), and I was wondering if we have a Angel Jr.? Its eyes aren't open yet, so we don't know if there red or black.
2. They were laid and hatched at the bottom of the cage. Will they be okay? Emmy DID have a nest box, she chose not to use it, and she laid them on the cage floor. When they were eggs, we moved them in the nest box, but she almost abandoned them (were not trying that again!)
This is their first clutch, and their doing well, I was just wondering if they will be fine or if I need to do anything?
White down has NOTHING to do with a white based bird. White down feathers on a budgie chick indicate that the chick is going to be an opaline chick. If it were going to be what is termed a "normal" ( normal wing pattern type budgie ) the down would be grey regardless of eventual body feather colour.
See here....http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r145/kazzart/DSCF6990.jpg in this nest of chicks you will see one of the budgie butts sticking it out has white down and the others have grey. They are all blue birds. BUT the one with the white down is an opaline and the others are not.
If you have an albino chick in your nest, you would see both white down when it comes in and red eyes ( under the eyelids )....red eyes can be seen from the day it hatches.

You would know if you had an albino chick in the nestbox as their eye sockets show red under the eyelid skin before the eyes open....it looks kind of spooky because it looks like the chick has no eyes.
