What sort of studio lighting do I need?
I need some to invest in some portable studio equipment. I think I'm gonna go for this light tent:

because it's convenient and would work well for what I want to do aside from run of the mill formal shots. I have no idea about lighting though and would like to keep it as cheep and basic as possible for now.

Would something like this be sufficient?
I don't really know much about flash/continuous lighting either but I think for me continuous would be a lot easier.

So light tents aren't so good for general people shots? Would something like the two lights I linked to just with a normal backdrop work better?
The light tent is basically for product shots where even, shadowless lighting is required. The lighttent material acts as a diffuser with the lights situated outside. (I use a smaller version)
For "people" shots, you are best with a three light setup as the basic.
This then gives you more control and you can adjust to have more/less shadow, you can highlight the hair (to separate from the background) etc.
You should add a softbox/snoot and a couple of umbrellas to your basic kit and then buy a couple of books on basic portraiture lighting setups.
Once you have more idea of how the positioning of lights affects the shot then you can start practicing more with reflectors, dark boards etc.
If you can get hold of a shop mannequin then they are good for practising on.
