Alien Bees and equivalent?
Hi,
Are Alien Bees a continuous light source? I am clueless in this area! What do they actually do? When looking at portraits taken with AB's, they seem to look continous. Or would you need a pocketwizard? Can they give the same effect as an flash such as the 580EX?
Also, is there anything else of the same quality/price region as the AB's?

Alien Bees are monoblock flash units, manufactured by Paul C Buff. They are NOT a continuous light source. They are triggered from a camera when the shutter fires either via a PC sync cord or wireless radio triggers (Pocket Wizard is one such make of trigger, the most expensive). As of this moment they're not yet available in the UK though should be shortly. They are going to be pricey though due to exchange rate & import taxes. There are plenty of alternatives for mains/battery powered monoblocks such as Bowens, Elinchrom and Calumet Genesis, some of which have battery packs available for outdoor location work.
You can use hotshoe speedlights to achieve the same look, although its slightly harder. AB's have more power, therefore they are often used outdoors to overpower the ambient daylight. It is possible to do this with speedlights, but because they are less power, you need more of them.
Although having said that, this shot;
was taken in bright daylgiht at midday with a single hotshoe flash.
In the studio/indoors, there's not any real difference. AB's have a faster recycle time, but hotshoe flashes are more portable & easier to set on on outdoor location shoots. Almost all of the models shot in this set were with hotshoe flashes, fired with Yongnuo RF-602 wireless triggers;

Its geared to off camera lighting, whether that be hotshoe flashes or monoblocks.
