Do you use the phrase "cushion of air" when describing ground effect?
Where did this come from?
Does anyone know the source of this phrase? Students always seem to give this answer when quizzed on ground effect, and yet I have never seen it in any textbook.
By the way, I am not sure where you get the idea that helicopters avoid ground effect due to turbulence. In fact, we leverage ground effect as much as possible when taking off, landing, or hovering when performance is an issue. Ground effect is your friend.
Lift is accomplished by low pressure above the wing, even if its rotating. Its low pressure relative to ambient pressure. There's a resultant high relative pressure on the underside of the wing. (It's chopping the same air so if one is a negative the balance must be positive.) If a high pressure envelope is confined by ground proximity, where in it can not dissipate, it provides an artificial lift. It's easier to push up on the wing than down on the ground. Once the envelope between wing and ground allows dissipation the upper wing surface is the only means of lift. Ground effect is only your friend when you are aware of it.
